Well, it has taken perhaps 4 months to understand wat exactly corporate means.. i dont intend to say i know now but yes i am getting to know. The drill- as soon as the college kids (yes i prefer to say it that way, i was one too :D) get placed into some company they get a confirmation letter and a date of joining, following which they get a basic training for the first few months (technical yes!) inclusive of few soft skills. During the training life isnt much different than how it used to be in college, since there would be people of our own kind there attending the training with you and there will be periodic tests to see if you are making any use of the time the trainer spends. And finally the training comes to an end and after which you actually come into the office atmosphere. Prior to which the training room part of the office was the only thing we experienced. we get to know our superiors and the organizational structure of the company .. yeah this is where all the words start getting bigger and the days start getting longer. People start speaking in the corporate lingo which is all bizarre for the new recruit and they are trying to blend in. Once assigned to a department we get introduced to the team who look up from their workstation and nod at you with a 'oh you are the new person' look (you must have noticed the usage of workstation rather than the word 'computer' / 'system' .. that s how it works around here..) and the most intriguing thing of all this is that- people dont talk! they jus dont. The whole workplace is silent with jus the omnipresent sound of the keys being tapped upon the keyboard (which really gets on ones nerves) and tring tring of the desk phones. Work place etiquette , now that is totally something else which requires another whole post to explain about! the same things such as cold wars and fights with contemporaries will happen at a more larger scale at the office in a concealed manner. You better not get stuck in it else you have a really hard time getting out of it and going on with the day-to-day activities. Keep an eye out to whom to talk to, cos ppl may put you into deep shit unless you are careful about the ppl you trust ( this is why people jus dont talk in corporates -mind voice !) during training i really worried if i would also become that silent once i join the team i even raised it as a concern to the trainer when they said you will know once u go to the department and now i know that u will become silent too since there wouldnt be any person for you to talk with.
Working isn't as cool as we thought it will be. Yes we work for our livelihood now and somehow it becomes a more serious thing when thought of that way.
Wow this post is all so serious now. ain't? :) well all work and no play makes anyone a dull person. so buck up all and find something more fun to do along side work to keep up the enthusiasm you had in life else yes slowly you will turn into a zombie ( yes u can smile now ) :D
Have a nice week ahead!
P.S: this is jus the beginning, more insights on work will follow =)
